LPC Student Mini-conference

The LPC planning committee is pleased to announce the addition of a Student Mini-conference for student attendees of the Linux Plumbers Conference 2008.

When:
09:00-17:00, September 16, 2008

Where:
PSU Business Accelerator
2828 SW Corbett Ave
Portland, OR 97201

The LPC Student Mini-conference prepares students to attend the Linux Plumbers Conference through an introduction to debugging techniques, open source community processes, and common issues across plumbing projects. Hands-on-tutorials from Linux-plumbing community members round out the program.

Schedule

  • 8:45 - Student sign-in begins
  • 9:30 - Professionalism for geeks (Introduction to conference attendance) - Brandon Philips
  • 9:45 - How to get paid/credit for open source - Sarah Sharp
  • 10:00 - Linux social engineering - Randy Dunlap
  • 10:45 - Creating a development box - Mark Gross
  • 11:30 - Student lightning talks
  • 12:00 - Free lunch
  • 1:00 - Device Drivers - Kristin Carlson Accardi
  • 1:45 - Debugging - Steve Rostedt
  • 2:30 - break
  • 3:00 - Concurrency and race conditions - Paul McKenney
  • 3:45 - Future of open source - Jay Lyman
  • 4:15 - Open source career panel
  • 5:00 - Wrap up

We encourage students to give a short (1-3 minutes) lightning talk about what open source projects they're working on, or would like to work on. To break the ice, the LPC student planning committee will talk about their projects first. Lightning talks will happen shortly before lunch.

The open source career panel will include representatives from six different companies who contribute to or use open source products. The six panelists are Jim Blandy (the Mozilla Corporation), Steven Rostedt (Red Hat), Pete Graner (Canonical), Andrew Greenberg (The Tova Company), Ted Tso (IBM), and Inaky Perez-Gonzalez (Intel). Students should come prepared with questions to ask our career panel participants.

Tuesday evening events

Attendees of the LPC Student Mini-conference are encouraged to attend all Linux Plumber's Conference evening events. The Tuesday night event at the Aura Lounge starts at 7:00pm and will allow minors until 10:00pm.

Attendees who are minors can gather at Backspace to continue socializing. There is free wifi, pool, and cafe drinks/snacks.

Lodging

The Portland NW Youth Hostel Group Center has rooms at $25/night. Students should make arrangements with the Youth Hostel.
