Sheraton Parking/Fridges

If you are planning to drive to the Sheraton and park, please be aware that the hotel has no free parking.  Parking rates for hotel guests are $22/night (self-park) and $30/night (valet).  For visitors, rates are $6 for the first hour and $4 for each additional hour for self-park, maxing out at $22 for a 24-hour period.  For visitors who choose to valet park, rates are $8 for the first hour and $4 for each additional hour, maxing out at $32.  For visitors, the restaurants and bars in the Sheraton will validate your parking ticket for 50% off your parking tab.

Also, please be aware that the Sheraton does not provide refrigerators in the rooms.  Every room has a pressure-sensitive mini-bar, and you will be charged if you move anything around, so you can not store your own items.  The hotel does have a very limited number of refrigerators available upon request, but at last count, they were already running out.  So don’t plan on having a fridge.

Schedule Updated

We’ve done a bit of schedule shuffling in the last few days in order to accomodate last-minute changes in travel plans or conflicts with the speakers. There have been a few minor changes in the timing of talks. In addition, we have one new talk planned, “Depths of the Cloud: How Linux networking needs to evolve”. Unfortunately, we also had a cancelled talk, “Policies for transcending Linux memory efficiency with zcache”. You can check out the lastest schedule here.

Exploring San Diego

LPC is nearly here, and some of you have been asking about things to do and see while you’re in San Diego.  To get you started, we’ve put together some information on sightseeing here, along with a bit of information on transit options from the Sheraton.  Also, in order to avoid the frequent conference problem of hordes of hungry geeks roaming the streets aimlessly in search of sustenance, we’ve collected some information about restaurants and bars in the area.  These lists are by no means complete, but should give you some ideas to get you going.

Evening Events Announced

LPC is right around the corner, and we have some great evening events planned for the conference. We hope you can join us!

On Tuesday, 8/28, LPC will be hosting a welcome cocktail reception at the Sheraton from 7:30 to 10:00 PM. Come by and have a drink, catch up with friends from far-flung locales, and meet fellow attendees.  We’ll be outdoors next to the water in the Lanai area of the hotel’s grounds, so bring a sweater if you get easily chilled. If you won’t yet have your conference badge because you arrive after the registration desk closes, we will have a list of attendees on hand so you’ll be able to attend without your badge. This event is open only to LPC attendees. Note that this event does not include dinner.

On Wednesday, 8/29, Qualcomm Innovation Center (QuIC) and Code Aurora Forum are sponsoring a reception for LinuxCon, CloudOpen, and LPC attendees at Bali Hai Restaurant, which has fantastic views overlooking the San Diego Bay. Bali Hai is located on Shelter Island, and we’ll be traveling to the event via water taxi from the Sheraton (or, you can get a taxi if you prefer). The event will include arcade games, a photo booth, and a classic rock band. Part of the venue is outdoors, so a light jacket or sweater is recommended.

Thursday night, 8/30, Intel is sponsoring another joint event with LinuxCon and CloudOpen at the Hotel Del Coronado, located on Coronado beach, one of the best beaches in the US. We’ll be having drinks and dinner out on the lawn, and making smores in fire pits on the beach. Again, bring a sweater if you tend to get chilled easily.  To attend this event, you will need to pick up an invitation at the Intel booth during the conference.

On Friday night, 8/31, we’ll be having the traditional LPC-only closing party at El Vitral, in the Gas Lamp District overlooking Petco Park. El Vitral specializes in gourmet Mexican food like nothing you’ve ever tasted before, and has a large collection of different tequilas and fantastic margaritas plus a selection of Mexican beers. Mexico is just a few minutes away from San Diego, so come enjoy some of the local flavors with us.

Sheraton Room Block Now Full

THE SHERATON IS NOW FULL.  You may call the hotel’s Reservation Center to check in the case of cancellations at 1-877-734-2726 and ask for the LinuxCon room rate.

We have booked another block of rooms at the Hilton San Diego Airport/Harbor Island, located .7 miles from the Sheraton.  The room rate is US$179/night and includes wireless internet as well as complimentary shuttle service to/from the Sheraton each day.

New MicroConference Added

Registration Is Now Full

We are pleased to announce that today  we have reached the maximum capacity for registration to the Plumbers Conference, therefore, as of now the registration is closed.  We have deliberately limited the number of registrations to 350 in order to allow for meaningful participation in the MicroConferences and productive interaction among the participants.
