One Line Summary

Linux ecosystem software is increasingly being used in safety-critical applications: are we ready to trust human lives to the software we are developing?

Abstract

There are traditional approaches to designing, writing, and testing software on which people depend for their lives. Software in the Linux ecosystem has never used any of these. Yet the breadth and volume of Linux deployments have demonstrated a level of reliability that encourages its use in safety-critical systems. Should our community push back or is this a challenge we should embrace?
